Tikka T3x Varmint .22-250 Rem | Precision Varmint Rifle

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

Our Tikka T3x Varmint chambered in .22-250 Remington is engineered for varmint hunters and precision shooters who demand exceptional accuracy at extended ranges. This rifle features a heavy stainless steel barrel that minimizes heat-induced accuracy drift during extended shooting sessions, making it ideal for prairie dog towns and predator calling setups.

We built the T3x Varmint with our signature 40-degree bolt lift that reduces the bolt throw for faster follow-up shots while maintaining full primary extraction power. The cold hammer-forged barrel delivers consistent sub-MOA accuracy, and the single-stage adjustable trigger breaks cleanly between 2-4 pounds. Our modular stock design accepts aftermarket chassis systems, and the receiver is drilled and tapped for Picatinny rail mounting.

Barrel Design & Ballistic Performance

Barrel Design & Ballistic Performance

The T3x Varmint .22-250 features our heavy contour stainless steel barrel that significantly improves heat dissipation during rapid-fire varmint sessions. The 23.7-inch barrel length provides complete powder burn for maximum velocity while maintaining maneuverability in field positions.

Our 1:14 twist rate stabilizes bullets from 40 to 55 grains perfectly—the sweet spot for .22-250 performance. The cold hammer-forging process creates a stress-free bore with consistent dimensions from chamber to crown, which translates to superior accuracy and extended barrel life. The threaded muzzle (5/8×24 TPI) accepts standard suppressors and muzzle brakes without requiring gunsmith services.

Action & Bolt Operation

Action & Bolt Operation

Signature 40-Degree Bolt Lift

Our T3x action features a 40-degree bolt lift—significantly shorter than traditional 90-degree throws—allowing you to cycle the action without breaking your shooting position or losing sight picture. This design choice matters during fast-paced prairie dog shooting when targets appear in rapid succession.

The two-lug bolt locks up with precision-machined surfaces that ensure consistent headspace and chambering alignment. We machine each bolt face perpendicular to the bore axis within 0.0005 inches, eliminating the accuracy robbing off-axis bolt closure found in lesser rifles. The mechanical ejector provides positive case extraction even with hot loads during summer varmint hunts.

Stock Configuration & Ergonomics

Stock Configuration & Ergonomics

The T3x Varmint ships with our black synthetic stock designed specifically for precision shooting applications. The wide, flat forend measures 2.2 inches across, providing a stable platform on sandbags, bipods, or benchrest equipment without the wobble common in hunting-profile stocks.

We incorporated a vertical grip angle that positions your trigger hand naturally without wrist strain during long shooting sessions. The pistol grip features textured panels that maintain purchase even with wet or gloved hands. The stock accepts our modular accessories including adjustable cheek risers and recoil pads in various thicknesses to customize length of pull from 13.5 to 14.25 inches.

Sub-half-MOA accuracy out of the box
I mounted a Vortex scope and took this to the range with factory Federal 40-grain ammunition. First three-shot group measured 0.42 inches at 100 yards. The trigger is exceptional and the 40-degree bolt throw lets me cycle without losing my cheek weld. This rifle shoots better than I do.

Perfect prairie dog rifle
We used this rifle for a South Dakota prairie dog hunt and I couldn’t be happier. The heavy barrel stayed cool during rapid fire, and I consistently connected on dogs out to 400 yards. The bolt cycles so smoothly I could work it without taking my eye off the scope. Best factory varmint rifle I’ve owned.

Incredible value for precision
I’ve shot custom rifles costing three times as much that don’t shoot any better than this T3x Varmint. The action is glass smooth, the trigger breaks at exactly 2.5 pounds with zero creep, and every group with Hornady 50-grain V-MAX stays under three-quarters of an inch. Tikka built a winner.

Love the 40-degree bolt lift
The short bolt throw makes such a difference during fast shooting sequences. I can cycle the action and get back on target twice as fast as my old rifle. Combined with the .22-250’s flat trajectory, I’m connecting on running coyotes I would have missed before. Outstanding engineering.

Barrel stays accurate when hot
I’ve put 40-round sessions through this rifle on hot summer days and the heavy stainless barrel maintains accuracy the whole time. My groups don’t open up like they did with my old sporter-weight barrel. The threaded muzzle made adding a suppressor easy. This is now my go-to varmint gun.

Best factory trigger available
I adjusted the trigger down to 2 pounds and it’s as good as custom triggers I’ve paid $200 for. Absolutely crisp break with no take-up or overtravel. Combined with the free-floated barrel and quality stock, this rifle delivers benchrest accuracy in a hunting-weight package. Extremely impressed with Tikka quality.

Common Questions About the Tikka T3x Varmint .22-250

Our 1:14 twist rate is optimized for bullets ranging from 40 to 55 grains—the most popular weight range for .22-250 varmint hunting. We’ve found that 40-grain hollowpoints deliver maximum velocity around 4,000 fps for flat trajectory on prairie dogs, while 50-55 grain bullets offer better wind-bucking ability for longer shots or larger varmints like coyotes.

Bullets lighter than 40 grains may not stabilize consistently, and bullets heavier than 55 grains typically require a faster twist rate. If you plan to shoot primarily 60-grain or heavier match bullets, consider our .223 Remington chambering with a faster twist rate instead.

The 40-degree bolt lift on our T3x action reduces the bolt throw by more than half compared to traditional 90-degree actions. This shorter arc means you can cycle the bolt without breaking your cheek weld or losing your sight picture through the scope.

In practical shooting, this translates to faster follow-up shots during rapid-fire varmint hunting scenarios. You’ll maintain better shooting position and target tracking compared to rifles that require you to significantly lift your head or alter your grip to work the action. The two-lug design still provides full camming power for primary extraction of fired cases.

The heavy barrel profile serves two critical functions for varmint shooters. First, the added mass absorbs and dissipates heat more effectively during extended shooting sessions—prairie dog hunting often involves 20-40 consecutive shots. Sporter-weight barrels heat quickly and accuracy degrades as the barrel temperature rises.

Second, the increased rigidity of a heavy barrel reduces harmonic vibrations during firing, which contributes to more consistent shot placement. While you can certainly hunt varmints with a lighter profile barrel, the heavy contour maintains precision through high round counts. If you prioritize walking long distances over shooting from fixed positions, our T3x Lite models offer a better balance.

We drill and tap the T3x receiver for our Tikka Optilock base system, which provides one of the strongest scope mounting platforms available. The receiver uses a proprietary hole pattern that accepts Tikka/Sako Optilock bases and rings.

Alternatively, you can mount a Picatinny rail base using the same receiver holes, which opens compatibility with any Picatinny-mount rings and accessories. The receiver is machined flat and square to the bore, so scope alignment is straightforward. We recommend 30mm or 34mm scope tubes with at least 40mm objective lenses to match this rifle’s long-range varminting capability.

While the .22-250 Remington is legal for deer in many states, we designed this rifle primarily for varmint hunting where the caliber truly excels. The .22-250 with appropriate 55-60 grain bullets can take deer-sized game with proper shot placement, but it’s not our recommended chambering for that purpose.

If you want a dual-purpose rifle for both varmints and deer, we suggest our T3x Varmint in .243 Winchester, which offers similar flat trajectory with substantially more energy for ethical deer harvests. The .243 also uses the same T3x action with our 40-degree bolt lift and delivers comparable accuracy.

Our T3x trigger adjusts easily using a 3mm hex key without removing the stock or action from the rifle. The adjustment screw is located inside the trigger guard, accessible from below. Turning the screw clockwise increases pull weight; counterclockwise decreases it.

We ship the rifle with the trigger set around 3 pounds. You can safely adjust from 2 to 4 pounds depending on your preference and application. For bench shooting and varmint work, most customers prefer 2-2.5 pounds. We recommend making small quarter-turn adjustments and testing the trigger after each change. Complete instructions are included in the owner’s manual, and you can find our detailed video guide in the support section of our website.

Our modular T3x stock system accepts numerous accessories. We offer adjustable cheek risers that mount to the comb without drilling, allowing you to achieve perfect eye alignment with larger objective scopes. Recoil pads in multiple thicknesses let you customize length of pull.

The forend includes two sling swivel studs—the forward stud accepts standard bipods with quick-detach or traditional swivel mounts. The stock also accommodates our extended magazine release and oversized bolt knobs for easier manipulation with gloves. If you want a more customizable platform, the T3x barreled action drops into numerous aftermarket chassis systems from manufacturers like GRS and MDT.
