Caliber Performance: Why .260 Remington

Caliber Performance: Why .260 Remington

The .260 Remington cartridge bridges the gap between traditional deer cartridges and long-range precision rounds. Based on the .308 Winchester case necked down to 6.5mm, it delivers flatter trajectory and less wind drift than .308 while maintaining excellent energy on target.

We selected the .260 Remington for the T3x because it excels in both hunting and target applications. Muzzle velocities reach 2,750-2,950 fps with 120-140 grain bullets, providing effective range beyond 500 yards for experienced shooters. The moderate recoil allows for better shot placement and faster follow-up shots compared to magnum calibers.

Action & Bolt Design

Action & Bolt Design

Our T3x action represents decades of refinement in bolt-action rifle design. The 60-degree bolt throw requires minimal hand movement, allowing you to keep your shooting position and maintain sight picture during cycling.

Three-Lug Bolt System

The bolt features three locking lugs rather than the traditional two-lug design. This distributes locking force more evenly and allows for the shorter bolt throw. We machine the bolt body from a single piece of steel and polish all bearing surfaces to achieve the famously smooth Tikka bolt operation.

Magazine System & Capacity

Magazine System & Capacity

The T3x uses a detachable box magazine system that ensures reliable feeding and quick reloading. Our standard magazines hold 3 rounds, but the action accepts optional extended magazines holding up to 10 rounds where legal for your intended use.

We designed the magazine well to work with both factory and aftermarket magazines. The magazine release is positioned ahead of the trigger guard for ambidextrous operation. Steel feed lips ensure consistent cartridge presentation to the chamber, and the follower includes an anti-tilt design that prevents binding.

Best rifle I’ve owned
I’ve owned several bolt-action rifles, but my T3x in .260 is hands-down the smoothest. The bolt cycles like butter, and I’m consistently shooting half-inch groups at 100 yards. The 10-round magazines are perfect for extended range days.

Outstanding accuracy out of the box
Mounted a scope and had it zeroed in three shots. My first group measured 0.6 inches with factory Hornady ammo. The recoil is so manageable I can spot my own impacts through the scope.

Perfect for Western hunting
Used this rifle on an antelope hunt last fall. Took a clean shot at 380 yards, and the .260 dropped him instantly. The rifle carried well all day, and the accuracy gave me confidence at distance.

Incredible value for the quality
I compared this against rifles costing twice as much, and the T3x shoots just as accurately. The trigger broke cleanly at 2.5 lbs right out of the box with no creep. Very impressed with Finnish craftsmanship.

My go-to precision rifle
I’ve put over 1,000 rounds through mine with zero malfunctions. Groups haven’t opened up at all. The .260 chambering is incredibly versatile—I use it for everything from varmints to deer-sized game.

Common Questions About the Tikka T3x .260 Remington

Our T3x .260 Remington comes standard with a 3-round detachable magazine. We also offer optional extended magazines with 5-round and 10-round capacities.

The 10-round magazines are particularly popular with competitive shooters and for extended range sessions. All magazines feature steel feed lips and work reliably with the T3x action. Please verify magazine capacity regulations in your jurisdiction before purchasing extended capacity magazines.

Both cartridges deliver similar ballistic performance with nearly identical bullet weights and velocities. The .260 Remington offers slightly more case capacity, while 6.5 Creedmoor has broader factory ammunition selection.

Our T3x platform performs exceptionally with both chamberings. Most shooters choose based on ammunition availability in their area. If you handload, the .260 Remington uses readily available .308 Winchester brass. Both will shoot sub-MOA in the T3x action with quality ammunition.

Yes, all T3x barrels come threaded 5/8×24 TPI under the thread protector. This is the standard thread pitch for .260 Remington suppressors and muzzle brakes.

Simply remove the thread protector and attach your suppressor following the manufacturer’s instructions. We recommend using a thread adapter with appropriate thread locker. The T3x action handles suppressed fire reliably, and the adjustable trigger allows you to maintain consistent shot placement with added weight on the muzzle.

With proper ammunition selection and shooter skill, the .260 Remington remains effective on deer-sized game beyond 500 yards. We recommend limiting shots to distances where you can consistently place bullets in the vital zone.

The high ballistic coefficient of 6.5mm bullets means the .260 retains excellent energy at distance. A 140-grain bullet still carries over 1,000 ft-lbs of energy at 600 yards. The T3x’s sub-MOA accuracy ensures the rifle won’t be the limiting factor in your maximum effective range.

Yes, our T3x features a single-stage trigger adjustable from 2 to 4 pounds pull weight. The adjustment screw is accessible without removing the action from the stock.

We set triggers to approximately 2.5 pounds from the factory, which most shooters find ideal. The trigger breaks cleanly with minimal overtravel and no creep. If you prefer a lighter or heavier pull, adjustment takes only a few minutes with a small hex key.

The T3x features an integral 17mm dovetail rail machined directly into the receiver. This provides a solid mounting surface that maintains zero through heavy recoil.

You’ll need scope rings designed for Tikka T3x dovetail rails. We offer Tikka Optiloc rings in various heights to accommodate different scope objective sizes. Many aftermarket manufacturers also produce compatible rings. The dovetail system is stronger and more repeatable than traditional drilled and tapped holes.

Regular cleaning keeps your T3x action operating smoothly. The bolt disassembles without tools by pulling the trigger while withdrawing the bolt, then unscrewing the rear bolt shroud.

Clean the bolt body and locking lugs with a quality gun solvent, then apply a light coat of gun oil to bearing surfaces. The firing pin channel should be cleaned every 500 rounds to prevent powder residue buildup. Clean the chamber and bore after each shooting session. Our maintenance guide includes detailed disassembly instructions and lubrication points.
